About Our Founder

Dr. Jennifer Wilson was a tenured professor at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, a dynamic teacher, an educational advocate, a researcher and an accomplished writer, and a leader in her field.  In addition to her many academic accomplishments, Jennifer had a passion for education, especially for girls and women around the world who historically have had fewer educational opportunities. In 2009 she began this nonprofit organization, A Chance through Literacy. The mission of the organization is to create a more socially just and equitable world by providing access to quality education to women and children in war-torn and poverty-stricken areas. Prior to her untimely death in 2011 as a result of domestic violence, she approved the first two grants to women to continue their education in Kenya and Bali. The board of A Chance through Literacy is passionate in our commitment to keep Jennifer’s vision and the mission of A Chance through Literacy alive.
